I got distracted a lot while working. Sometimes I don’t know how to start working and focus. I know how long I plan to work and what I want to work on, but still, I didn’t manage to start working and focus. Then I just procrastinate a lot.

Have you ever felt like that? Where do you know what to focus on, but you just keep on procrastinating?

Well, you might find a solution to that in this article. Well, I might be wrong, but hear me out.

This is actually underrated and might help you to start focusing and even start working.

The problem

We tend to get distracted while working. We feel like the task is too much or that you don’t know whether you will finish it or not. The bigger the task, the more you will procrastinate. The more you procrastinate, the more you lose confidence in finishing tasks.

Well, procrastinating sometimes could help you think again before taking action, but a lot of the time, procrastinating makes us avoid our own work.

It makes you feel disappointed by your own dedication or work. Then, we start to question ourselves about whether we are capable of finishing it or not.

You might have found your passion and your ambitious goals. Then you face a problem where it actually doesn’t really matter right now, but you already think about it too much.

Then you feel overwhelmed and start thinking, “Maybe that’s not my passion”. Then you fall into the trap of “I don’t know my passion”.

You only need to start working right now. You can start with what you can do. You don’t have to finish a project today. You can plan it and start working on it in small pieces. Start breaking your goals into small pieces so that you will be more likely to progress.

We are focusing on progress, not results, because results will come later. We only need to plan for the result and how we achieve it, but we don’t have to think about the result too much. The key to achieving goals is taking action.

Deadlines!

We all have deadlines. If you don’t have a deadline for your task, you might not prioritize those goals. As a result, you feel less motivated and pushed by yourself.

Deadlines make us can’t really do the task in a small portion. Deadlines make us feel anxious about whether we will finish them or not, but that’s what pushes us.

How can we start focusing on our work even though the deadline is near and we are not focused yet? This tool might help you start focusing.

The tool: Click Start!

This tool might help you start working toward your goals. You might have a goal of writing a 3,000-word essay. You might have the goal of building a strong body. You might have other goals that could really make you better than you are right now.

So, I just found out that clicking the button to start a timer helps you start working and focusing. I just tried to start working in 90 minutes. I focus for 90 minutes, and then I can do whatever I want after that. The point is not how long you want to work.

The point is in the time when you start clicking the timer.

How it goes will be like this:

  1. You set a timer; it’s up to you whether you want 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or more.
  2. Then, before you start your timer, you might want to clean your desk a little bit. Not much! so that your energy is not drained by cleaning your desk.
  3. After you feel like “I don’t think I would start working” or “I might check another website before I start”, START THE TIMER!

It is important to start the timer as soon as you can. While considering your working desk, at least you can work. It doesn’t matter if you have a dirty desk. The key is that you can start working.

You might have a cup of coffee in front of you; start putting it aside.

You might not know what you need to do; just start the timer.

Your body will start in action mode. Then it will be much easier to think about what you want to do for your work or task.

It’s similar to the 5-second rule, but the difference with this is that you can see it and click something, which is the button, to make you start. Then you will start working.

Conclusion

Procrastination has become a big part of our failure. It makes us lazier, avoiding our tasks and decreasing our confidence.

The tool of clicking the button on your timer, whether on your phone or in your alarm, could give you motivation and confidence to start. After you start, it will be much easier to continue.

“Starting is the first step towards achieving anything. Don’t wait for the perfect moment; make this moment perfect by taking action.”
